Italian silver cream jug and lidded sugar bowl

Item number: STE19121611

Price: $1095

A lovely silver cream jug and sugar basin with cover. These pieces are hallmarked 800 *29PD, which means they are 800/1000 parts silver (80%). I have identified the hallmark as belonging to silversmith RINO GREGGIO ARGENTERIE SPA - Tencarola di Selvazzano Dentro - Padova. These two items are extremely well made. I would say they date from about 1950 or ealier. They contain about 10 oz of silver.

A nice sterling silver napkin ring hallmarked 92.5 ST. Has a simple decoration around the edge (see photos), and weights 27 gms which is about 1 oz. The ring is also monographed but it is hard to read the script writing.

A lovely machine turned sterling silver napkin ring hallmarked to Birmingham 1927 (or 1902). Weighs 13.3 gms, or about 1/2 oz. It is engraved "Judy".

Victorian sterling silver napkin ring

Item number: STE23010213

Price: $110

A lovely Victorian sterling silver napkin ring. It is beautifully engraved and decorated with two beads along the edges. The hallmark seems to have been removed for some reason, but definitely tests as sterling silver, and does not present as damaged where the hallmark obviously was. Weighs 27 gms, which is about 1 oz.

Fabulous sterling silver cup

Item number: STE23010246

Price: $430

This is a real stunner: a lovely silver mug or cup. It is made by Joseph Rodgers of Sheffield in 1897. It is also engraved with the original owner's name...Herbert George Benjamin Hamersley, and dated 22 May 1899. The photographs should also show that the bottom is curved. It has a lovely handle and weighs about (using my big kitchen scales) 150-200 gms, approximately 5-6 ozs. The cup is in excellent condition.

My research shows that Herbert Hamersley may have been the Vicar of Edwinstowe at the turn of the century. Herbert Hamersley was born in Nuffield, Oxfordshire c1870. He was listed as a resident in the census report in Wilton House, Melville Street, Ryde, Isle of Wight, 1871. His father was Reverend Arthur Hamersley, who was born in Great Haseley, Oxfordshire 19/02/1841. Arthur died 21/11/1872 at 31 years of age. He married Jane Maria Hopkins 14/02/1865. Jane was born in Nuffield, Oxfordshire c1839. Jane was the daughter of Reverend T. Hopkins. She was listed as a resident in the census report in Wilton House, Melville Street, Ryde, Isle of Wight, 1871. Arthur Hamersley was listed as a resident in the census report in Bourne, Holdenhurst, Hampshire, 1841. He was listed as head of household in the 1871 census in Wilton House, Melville Street, Ryde, Isle of Wight. Rector of Nuffield, Oxfordshire. Had issue - along with two daughters, Walter and Herbert. Reverend Arthur Hamersley and Jane Maria Hopkins had 4 children, one being Herbert of course. Herbert would have acquired this cup at the age of 29 or so. It is not known if this cup was used by him in his church activities. NICE STORY ANYHOW.
