Fabulous sterling silver cup
Item number: STE23010246
Price: $430
This is a real stunner: a lovely silver
mug or cup. It is made by Joseph Rodgers of Sheffield in 1897. It is
also engraved with the original owner's name...Herbert George Benjamin
Hamersley, and dated 22 May 1899. The photographs should also show that
the bottom is curved. It has a lovely handle and weighs about (using my
big kitchen scales) 150-200 gms, approximately 5-6 ozs. The cup is in
excellent condition.
My research shows that Herbert Hamersley may have
been the Vicar of Edwinstowe at the turn of the century. Herbert
Hamersley was born in Nuffield, Oxfordshire c1870. He was listed as a
resident in the census report in Wilton House, Melville Street, Ryde,
Isle of Wight, 1871. His father was Reverend Arthur Hamersley, who was
born in Great Haseley, Oxfordshire 19/02/1841. Arthur died 21/11/1872
at 31 years of age. He married Jane Maria Hopkins 14/02/1865. Jane was
born in Nuffield, Oxfordshire c1839. Jane was the daughter of Reverend
T. Hopkins. She was listed as a resident in the census report in Wilton
House, Melville Street, Ryde, Isle of Wight, 1871. Arthur Hamersley was
listed as a resident in the census report in Bourne, Holdenhurst,
Hampshire, 1841. He was listed as head of household in the 1871 census
in Wilton House, Melville Street, Ryde, Isle of Wight. Rector of
Nuffield, Oxfordshire. Had issue - along with two daughters, Walter and
Herbert. Reverend Arthur Hamersley and Jane Maria Hopkins had 4
children, one being Herbert of course. Herbert would have acquired this
cup at the age of 29 or so. It is not known if this cup was used by him
in his church activities. NICE STORY ANYHOW.
